National Rail Museum

National Rail Museum
New Delhi, India

The F-734 had many problems since it had been exposed to the external atmosphere. This had caused all types of deterioration, i.e., physical, chemical and biological. Corrosion, pitting, flaking were the major problems.

Some of the major parts of the locomotive like under frame, boiler, steam dome, wheels and axle, chimney were in very bad condition. The paint layer of the wheels and the axle were flaking, and rust could also be seen. Some areas of the tender were badly corroded due to which much of the tender’s surface had been eaten away. The cabin had been over painted and ironically, some of the brass equipments found in the driver’s cabin were painted. The woodwork of the cabin were in the worst condition. Also, the wooden plank inside the cabin was displaced. The firebox was also rusted and had been literally transformed into a dustbin.
