In 1561, Akbar conquered the Muslim state of Malwa, in north central India. In this scene of the taking of Sarangpur Fort, the men within the fort fight to protect their women, while a mounted horseman rushes through the gate. Note the elephants in brightly coloured armour and the horses, in the lower left, depicted from the rear.
