Henry Cabot Lodge's text describes this first skirmish of the American Revolution, when British troops defeated American militiamen in Lexington, near Boston. Pyle's painting - one of twelve for Lodge's text - is less an illustration of Lodge's minimally descriptive words, and more an image of the heroism and pathos of wounded and dying Americans.
