Once sun dried, the fabric is boiled in a large copper cauldron filled with water, dhavadi flowers, and alizarin. The dhavadi flowers bring out the whiteness of the unpainted areas, while the alizarin reacts with the alum to produce blood-red, the use of the copper vessel aids in the flowering of the colour.
The boiling process can take from half an hour to three hours depending on the size of the piece.
