La Touche won a medal for this work at the Paris Salon of 1888 and received excellent notices. Yet soon afterwards he abandoned his sombre realist manner and started painting the brightly coloured and freely brushed works for which he is better known. Here a tranquil moment after the trauma of a birth is tenderly observed. Several carefully observed details hint at the narrative of the young couple’s life together.
