The Senate was established in Poland pursuant to the Round Table agreements. Solidarity won 99 per cent of the Senate seats in the elections of July 4th (99 mandates). Initially, Senate sessions were held in the Sejm’s plenary hall. Later, a separate room was prepared for the Senate. Pictured, in the first row, left to right, the invited guests: Wojciech Jaruzelski - 1st Secretary of the Polish United Workers’ Party and the head of the State Council, Lech Wałęsa - leader of Solidarity, Bronisław Geremek - chairman of the Civic Parliamentary Club.
