The Custom House was built in 1764 to designs by Richard Gillow. Built for the city's Port Commissioners, it features a symmetrical street facade and a tetrastyle Ionic portico. Built to replace an earlier Custom House, it remained in use until 1882 when the Customs was transferred to Barrow-in-Furness. The building was restored in 1983-4 and opened as the Lancaster Maritime Museum in 1985.
