The excavations undertakend in the region of Pompei at the behest of Charles of Bourbon since 1748 continued throughout the 19th century. They inspired many Italian and foreign artists for years as they searched for a glimpse of the past. In this painting, Gaeta is influened by the effects of light researched by Marco de Gregorio, and by his love for ancient Pompei transmitted to him by Gigante.
