The painting represents the first of five canvas dedicated to the Michelangelo’s death and apotheosis that were fitted in the ceiling of the Galleria. Ciampelli shows to having taken as a model the canvas of Vasari with the Oration of Antonio Giacomini, carried out for the ceiling of the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. The scene represents the moment of the obsequies of Michelangelo in San Lorenzo, during which, Benedetto Varchi held the funeral prayer from the pulpit of Donatello. In the painting is also inserted the figure of Archduke Francesco de’ Medici but despite the expectations of the participants, did not attend the ceremony.
