The Garden of Saint Paul's Hospital (`Leaf-Fall')

You see a group of trees with tall, bare trunks and dense crowns, falling leaves borne by the wind, and a lonely wanderer. Vincent van Gogh called this study ‘The fall of the leaves’. It was probably done in or near the garden of the hospital where he was staying at the time. Van Gogh chose a high vantage point and an unusual composition, in which the dark-red tree trunks in the foreground that have been cut off on both sides. They divide the composition vertically in two.
