Ugo Zannoni created "Il Genius of the Insurrection" in 1869 as a result of his unsuccessful entry for the Vicenza, Italy, city's 1868 competition for a monument honoring those killed in the uprisings of 1848. One arm is lifted to call out to the rebels while the other is clutched to carry the flag as he steps into the act of scaling the barricades. The sculpture depicts the ideal picture of a young man with a nude, lean, jerky figure, his lips open in a cry of exhortation.
