The statue represents a flag-bearer of the Sardinian army while he defends the national flag. Soon after the inauguration of the monument, which had an evident patriotic meaning, the piedmontese armies crossed the Swiss Canton of Ticino to free the Italian region Lombardia from Austria (April 1859).
