Colour postcard showing the facade of the Granville Theatre of Varieties, within a streetscape in Walham Green, London. The theatre was built on a small site, between two converging roads, and it is impressive that it was possible to build a three tier, 1,000 seat theatre on this site at all. Internally, the auditorium was believed to be one of architect Frank Matcham’s most delightful. Sadly, in 1971 the theatre was demolished. There was a public outcry that such a beautiful and interesting theatre had been lost. The demolition lead to the creation in 1972 of the Save London’s Theatres Campaign, and represents a turning point in attitudes towards the protection of Victorian and Edwardian theatres.
