The arrival of the Great Western Railway (GWR) impacted hugely on the development of Swindon. The decision to build locomotive and carriage works here from the 1840s effectively created a new town to the north of the existing hilltop market town. Inevitably, the new town grew beyond the site of the GWR Works.
