The Grotto and River God's Cave was built in circa 1748 by William Privet for Henry Hoare, owner of the Stourhead estate. Comprising several passages and chambers, it includes a cold bath and spring, and a statue. The statue showcases a story from Virgil’s 'Aeneid', a key work from classical literature and shows “the nymph of the grot[to]” reclining above a spring of water in the cave.
