The Gunners Barracks was built at Mosman in 1873 as part of the NSW Government’s efforts to install coastal fortifications at Georges Heights and neighbouring precinct, Middle Head, during the 1870s. Originally serving as an officer’s mess and now a charming high tea venue, the striking sandstone building received Commonwealth Heritage listed status in 2004. It was designed by James Barnet, who designed the second iteration of Macquarie Lighthouse at Vaucluse in the 1880s. Both the Gunners Barracks and Macquarie Lighthouse are protected by the Harbour Trust.
