This painting depicts the farm at Cheltenham that was established in 1901 by the artist and her chemist husband, George Ekins Gulliver. Henrietta farmed lavender commercially for distilling, and also maintained extensive flower gardens in Sassafras, in the Dandenong Ranges.
In 1922 the Gullivers sold the farm to the owners of the Methodist Homes, who already possessed much of the adjoining land. By the 1950s the Catholic Church had bought the land, later building a home for disadvantaged boys that was run by the Hospitaller Brothers of St John of God. In 1966, the land was sold to the Myer Emporium. Today the Gullivers' farm is part of the Southland shopping centre.

- A.E. Ferris: Henrietta Maria Gulliver moved to Melbourne in 1884 and worked in a city florist, where she met Tom Roberts and through him Arthur Streeton, who remained a lifelong friend. She studied at the National Gallery school between 1906 and 1911, and also helped to found the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Fellow artists and friends, some of whom also painted on the Gulliver property, included Clara Southern, Hilda Rix Nicholas, Elsie Barlow and Alice Bale. Henrietta was an active member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters group and the Victorian Artists' Society, serving as president in 1909–10 and again in 1937–38.
