This late work by Mantegna testifies to the great influence antiquity had upon Renaissance art. The latter understood itself as a rebirth of the Classical Age. Following the "dark", supposedly artless era of the Middle Ages, a fundamental renewal of the arts was sought. Mantegna was substantially involved in rediscovering antiquity and using it as a new model.
