Following the Pinkerton's surrender after the Battle of Homestead, they were forced from their barges and marched toward the town. On the way, the Pinkerton's were forced to run a "bloody gauntlet" where they were beaten and pelted with stones before being imprisoned in the Homestead Opera House. This action proved detrimental to the striker's cause, as it began to turn public opinion against them.
