Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was inaugurated on September 8, 1971 with the world premiere performance of Leonard Bernstein's Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers with texts by Bernstein, Stephen Schwartz, and Paul Simon; and choreography by Alvin Ailey (pictured: Alan Titus and Company).
