The Indian Room at Osborne House

An ink illustrator's drawing of the interior of the Durbar [Court] Room at Osborne House. Signed with two sets of initials, "H.W.B." and "T.S.C.C.". The figures are presumably by Crowther and the architecture by Brewer.

The designing of the Durbar or Indian Room at Osborne House was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1889 from Bhai Ram Singh, a former pupil of John Lockwood Kipling at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. The room was completed in 1891, and the Queen lunched and dined there over Christmas of that year.

An illustrator's drawing was a drawing made for reproduction in, primarily, the 'Graphic' or the 'Daily Graphic', which depicted royal events and functions from about 1871. Crowther and Brewer worked for both newspapers in the last decade of the nineteenth century; in this drawing, the figures are presumably by Crowther and the architecture by Brewer.
