Until the 1950s herring, a fatty and nutritious fish, was popular food among the folk. Not only because of nutritional value, but also because the christian church laid down about 195 days of fasting each year.

This meant that meat was forbidden more than half the year. Also, herring was much cheaper and the salted fish was easy to store.
