The picture by Andrzej Guttfeld is made with the freedom of expression that positions it between abstraction and figuration. Although the presented forms suggestively connote the furnishings of the unknown, modest interior, attention is drawn not as much to the identification of objects as to the contemplation of the painting's pictorial values. The far-reaching deformation of forms, represented here as strange, dark phantoms, causes us to treat them more as gestures of painting expression – an attempt to wake up from hypnosis of the deep blue-sky background. Using the technique of oil on canvas, the artist has applied the paint vigorously and (as one would assume) quickly, allowing it here and there to run down in thin trickles, searching for different ways of the texture shaping and varying the opacity of the pigment in various parts of the picture.
The boldness of colour and expressive design creates an emotional nature of the painting composition, where both the colour and the usage of deformation are meant to express the passion. In turn, the tendency to co-ordinate the colour tone shapes the decorative character of the picture, which can be noticed not only in the case of the harmonious colour solution of The Interior, but in the artist's whole output, where he also uses, besides oil, the pastel technique.
