In typical John Gay style, shoppers have been captured informally as they look into the cages at a pet shop somewhere in Camden, probably in the 1960s. Cages are stacked from floor to ceiling in the shop space lit by a large lantern window, which may have influenced Gay's decision to photograph here. Exotic birds occupy perches in the centre of the room and a warning sign with multiple exclamation marks hangs from the ceiling.
