Christ Church was founded as Cardinal College in 1525 by Cardinal Wolsey. In 1546 it was refounded as Christ Church by King Henry VIII. The Great Hall has been in near continuous use since the college's foundation. The hammerbeam roof was built by Humphrey Coke, chief carpenter to the king.
