Lower Market was built in 1835-6 to designs by Charles Fowler, who had earlier designed Covent Garden Market and Hungerford Market in London. Lower Market was gutted by fire as a result of a bombing raid on 4 May 1942. The shell of the building stood until 1960 when it was finally demolished.
