Audley End country house was built between 1605 and 1614. It was built for Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk by John Thorpe, Earl of Northampton and the mason Bernard Janssen. For a short time, the house was owned by King Charles II. In 1948 it was sold to the Ministry of Works. The walled Kitchen Garden includes a peach 'Flat China' tree that dates from 1819.
