Tempeh was first documented in the 1600s in Tembayat Village, Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia. Java Island, where tempeh is most spread and consumed, is one of Indonesia's more than 17,000 islands. The archipelago gave birth to more than 300 tribes, contributing to the vast diversity of food culture, including tempeh. Java Island is the population-densest region as it has rich historical backgrounds from ancient kingdoms, international trade, to the world's largest Buddhist temples, the Borobudur.
