Stockholm, Sweden

Painting from the north, evangelist side of the ceiling in Eksjö old church demolished in 1887. The image shows the Last Supper (Mathew 26:20-30). The painting was made by Jürgen Kunkel in 1687 based on an engraving by Matthäus Merian the Elder from 1630. Kunkel has not followed the original in parts. Some of the disciples on the right-hand side are very different from the ones on Merian’s original print and could be self portraits of Kunkel and his journeymen.
