A principal illustrator at Harper's Magazine, Elizabeth Shippen Green painted The Library as one of a series of images that accompanied an article on the daily life of a housewife and mother. Founded in 1850, Harper’s Magazine cultivated an educated readership and gained a reputation as an intellectual publication, especially as cheaper magazines with lighter articles and more advertising, such as The Saturday Evening Post, became popular at the turn of the 20th century.
