In 1889, Twachtman and his family settled in a farmhouse just outside Greenwich, Connecticut, a quick commute via train from New York City, where he taught. He remodeled and expanded the house in the 1890s, adding this footbridge over the brook. He painted it numerous times, revisiting the landscape in the same way as the French impressionists.
