Between 1740 and 1743, when demand for paintings was low, Canaletto made his famous series of Vedute prints: views of Venice and nearby towns including Padua, Dolo and Mestre. He made them at the instigation of the British consul in Venice, Joseph Smith, who was a collector and art dealer. The 34 etchings represent his complete graphic oeuvre and are considered a milestone in eighteenth-century Italian printmaking.

  • Artist Information: The Venetian painter Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) specialised in cityscapes of Venice. As a rule he based his paintings on extensive sketch studies that he made on location. Sometimes he used a camera obscura for this, a 17th-century predecessor of the photo camera. He could not make a print through the lens of the camera obscura, but he could produce a careful study of the composition. His cityscapes were very popular on the international market. From 1730 he even worked intensively with the British consul, who exported his works to England and arranged various trips to England for Canaletto.
