The Lynchers

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Hayes was a highly regarded social realist painter and sculptor active during the Harlem Renaissance. Mostly self-taught, he created a series of murals at the Harlem Hospital Center beginning in 1936. "The Lynchers" features a pointed and unusual depiction of a lynching scene. Instead of focusing on the black victim, Hayes paints the white perpetrators and spectators, including children.
