The green turtle exhibits an herbivorous diet during most part of its life. As hatchlings, however, this species has an omnivorous diet with a strong carnivorous tendency. Through their selective feeding on seagrass meadows, green turtles increase the productivity and nutrient content of seagrass blades. They also contribute significantly to nutrient cycling, and sediment stabilization, maintaining ecological balance.
