The Mask

circa 1740s

The Fan Museum

The Fan Museum
London, United Kingdom

Fan with carved and painted bone sticks. The double paper leaf is decorated on the recto with an engraving over-painted in watercolour. A central mask with peepholes is perhaps the most striking element of this playful design probably made for the Spanish market, of which only a handful examples are thought to have survived. The vignettes on either side are also of interest and include a fan shop in which mask fans are on display (far right).
