"The mast" (November)

November, in the calendar the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry Paris and Bourges, "The mast"

The sun's chariot crosses the sky from Scorpio to Sagittarius. In a mountainous landscape, three swineherds lead their drove into the undergrowth to feed them on acorns and fatten them : this is the mast. The castle on the left edge of the image and the lake we glimpse in the valley, are barely identifiable. The painter Jean Colombe has paid particular attention to the light created by the glow of the trees.
