Original Image is a Born Digital from Smithsonian Institution Libraries' and Smithsonian Institution Archives' online exhibit "From Smithson to Smithsonian: The Birth of an Institution,"
Digital Image of the oil painting, "The Mediator." The original painting is attributed to D. MacFarlane, and the original size of the painting is 59h x 88w cm (23 3/16h x 34 11/16w in). The painting is owned by the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
SUMMARY:
"The Mediator" transported Richard Rush with James Smithson's legacy, in the form of gold sovereigns packed in eleven boxes, as well as his personal effects including his mineral cabinet, library, and scientific writings, across the Atlantic Ocean. The ship arrived in New York harbor on August 29, 1838, and the personal effects were deposited with the collector of the Port of New York on September 1.
