Historical subjects were one of this artist’s specialities although he was also an illustrator, architectural draughtsman and accomplished violinist. Here he depicts
a scene from ‘Woodstock’, a historical novel published in 1826 by Walter Scott set during the English Civil War.

The story revolves around Charles II’s escape from England after the battle of Worcester, and his eventual return to London in May 1660. Sir Henry Lee, a staunch supporter of the monarchy, was a ranger of the royal lodge and park of Woodstock.
