As Benton traveled about the country gathering inspiration for his art, he was never without his sketchbook. Several of the lithographs in this gallery are based on drawings Benton made while on the road, including The Meeting. In this instance, more than a decade separates Benton’s drawing of a preacher and his congregation in a West Virginia meeting house from this lithograph. Nevertheless, the print is nearly an exact replica of the 1928 drawing, retaining a freshly observed, made-on-the-spot feel.
