The Midland Hotel was built in 1932-3 to designs by the architect Oliver Hill. It was commissioned by the London Midland and Scottish Railway to replace the company's existing Victorian hotel. Constructed in concrete and rendered brick, it has a curved plan, with its convex side facing the sea. Decorative elements were created by the artists Eric Gill, Gill and Denis Tegetmeier and Eric Ravilious.
