In the 1840s, Charles Munchen is a member of the lodge Les Enfants de la Concorde Fortifiée. In 1848, he founds a military lodge in Echternach called Espérance. Besides his brother Alphonse, other officers of the Luxembourg contingent stationed in Echternach in 1848 will also join the new lodge. In 1848, Munchen becomes a member of the constituent assembly and is elected in May of the same year as one of Luxembourg's three representatives to the Frankfurt National Assembly.
