Programme of Eduardo De Filippo's show "Il monumento" ("The monument") performed at Pergola Theatre during the season 1970/1971 (inside). Bending for the first time his rules to never introduce, to never explain his comedies, Eduardo writes a short introduction of his show “Il monumento”, which is inserted in the programme. «It being understood that in my opinion audience and critics should be free to understand and judge a theatrical work without the author’s explanation, in the case of the show “Il monumento” I need to say just few words to introduce this comedy. There are some fundamental feelings for the humankind, such as love between man and woman, love for sons, love for the own country, which are always true; the humble, the ignorant, the "simpleton" trusts in this superstructure, and it often happens that he keeps believing in it, even when who built that superstructure recants it, in order to create another one, which apparently seems new but that in substance is the same thing. Though denouncing “rhetorical” values against the “true” values, though not saving the “simpleton”, I feel a surge of human sympathy for those who are victims of the egoistic craftiness of powerful people.
