The Morley Book of Hours

Books of Hours were Christian devotional books, popular in the fifteenth century. Some were lavishly illuminated but others were more modest, such as this book, in which some borders are decorated with foliage designs.

The book is known to have been for some time in the possession of the Sacheverell family of Morley because the signature of Henry Sacheverell is written near the beginning of the book. A note underneath identifies this as Henry Sacheverell of Morley who died in 1620. The back of the book has been used somewhat in the manner of a family bible, and records the dates of birth of Henry (1619) and his siblings, the children of Jasinthe and Elizabeth Sacheverell.
