The mother of Michelangelo, pregnant, fall from her horse

Francesco Furini1628

Casa Buonarroti

Casa Buonarroti
Firenze, Italy

The episode, carried out by Furini for the left door-arches, is the first figurative statement of the story that saw protagonist the mother of Michelangelo, three months before the birth. During a horseback riding trip, Michelangelo’s mother fell and for divine participation, both she and her son that she was carrying, remained unbelievably unharmed. This episode, not quoted by the sources contemporary to Michelangelo, became probably widespread following the death of the great master, to improve the legends about the birth of the genius.
