The Naming of Jesus / Circumcision

Unknownca.1633

Museu de São Roque
Lisboa, Portugal

The scene represents the Child Jesus’ circumcision at the Temple. His mother Mary takes her child to the temple eight days after his birth (a Jewish tradition) for the High Priest to perform the circumcision. The painting depicts not the actual moment of the circumcision but the following one, when Jesus receives his name, a subtle transition scene clarified by the bespectacled figure standing on the right hand side, holding a paper and looking up at the emblem of Christ, which two angels hold above. The painting iconographic discourse shows affinities with the central painting for the altarpiece of the former jesuit Professed House of Seville (Today the Church of the Annunciation) – a large canvas dating from 1604 to 1606, attributed to Juan de Roelas.

  • Commission: This painting belongs to a set of seven large paitings commissioned by the Jesuits in the 17th century to be placed in the centre of the retable, each one according to the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. This practice of changing the paintings was an unprecedented initiative in the Church of São Roque, as a means to illustrate each liturgical season with pictures representing New Testament scenes. According to the Liturgical Calendar the first liturgical season starts with: Advent, which is illustrated by the ANNUNCIATION. The next is Christmas time, which is illustrated by the ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS; Ordinary time is illustrated by the NAMING OF JESUS/ CIRCUNCISION; Lent starts with the CALVARY; Easter shows THE RESSURRECTION; Pentecost time is illustrated by THE PENTECOST, and the last painting for the liturgical calendar is the ASSUMPTION OF MARY.
