In 2004, under the direction of José Antonio, the National Ballet of Spain revived Federico García Lorca's Café de Chinitas, with decorations by Salvador Dalí. This show was first performed by Encarnación López in Detroit in 1943, two years before her death in the USA, with her sister Pilar as one of the main characters. The charismatic artist wanted to pay homage to Lorca with a ballet that brought together the popular songs that had been recorded in 1931.
José Antonio's choreography is complemented by the work of artists such as Lluis Danés, who is responsible for the stage direction, the film-maker Manuel Huerga, who wrote the script, the costume designer Yvonne Blake, an Oscar winner, and the musical director Chano Domínguez, with the singer Esperanza Fernández as the lead. Ana Moya, Miguel Ángel Corbacho and Elena Algado are the protagonists.
