Eitai Bridge was built in 1698 in Fukagawa, at the mouth of the Sumida River. Soon after, a popular pleasure center developed in the area. Eitai Bridge was the longest among the five major bridges that spanned the Sumida.
The basic compositional scheme of this print is the artist sought to show more of the bridge's length. The single-sailed boats in the open water and those docked at the pier in front of restaurants are coastal junks, indicating the area shown is close to Edo Bay, where such boats were commonly observed. A smaller raft and a pleasure boat are passing under the bridge.
