The painting portrays an everyday scene: a nobleman and a peasant are talking while standing by a farmstead fence. The nobleman is wearing a dark blue kontush bound by a wide, patterned sash, and a blue hat. Propping himself on a stick, he is intently listening to the peasant. The peasant is wearing a grey sermėga [Lithuanian overcoat]. He is depicted from the back turned three-quarters, and is resting a rake and holding a canvas sack on his right shoulder. His left hand slightly raised, he is explaining something to the nobleman. Beyond the fence the end of the cottage is visible, along with several trees. The colouring is very lively and is rich in undertints. The canvas is painted in wide, bold strokes and conveys the mood of a sunny autumn day.
