The two pairs of combatants to the right probably represent Ares’ sons Phobos and Deimos, respectively “fear” and “dread” in the context of war. The inscription of Phobos’ name is fragmentarily preserved on the cornice above the frieze. Phobos has forced a Giant to his knees and rushes to aid Deimos, who is being held in the iron grip of another Giant. The Giant bites Deimos in the right shoulder […]. Elisabeth Rohde reassembled the right snake of this bearded “biter” figure in1963 with fragments from the museum storerooms.
