This small narrative scene of an elegantly dressed woman receiving a letter from a young courier on a shaded terrace was likely painted in Rome in the 1860s. Although he was born in Spain, Fortuny spent most of his career working in the Eternal City and Paris. The artist, known for his exacting style in both etching and painting, was influenced by both Goya and contemporary academic artists.
